Ask a drummer which brand sells the most kits and they’ll say Ludwig, Pearl or Yamaha. It’s none of them. The biggest drum brand in the world today is the company that made the 808.
This is 67 years of drum kits, ranked by kits sold each year, acoustic and electronic. 70 brands, from Premier of Leicester to the e-kits of today. Only four brands have ever held the top spot: Premier, then Ludwig after Ringo Starr played one on Ed Sullivan, then Pearl for 41 years on the back of the Export, and since 2013 Roland and its V-Drums. Along the way: the Japanese stencil kits, Tama named after the owner’s wife, Simmons and its hexagon pads, the millionth Pearl Export, the Chinese district that builds one in three kits on Earth, lockdown, and Roland buying DW.
Every kit brand that made the world’s top 30 in any year is on this chart. Kits sold under store names (like Silvertone) count for the factory that built them. Cymbals, single drums and e-drum modules sold on their own are not counted.
