In the 17th century, the estate was acquired by the Forster family, who were wealthy ironmasters. They constructed West Dean House. Edward James, a wealthy British eccentric, poet, and patron of the arts passionate about surrealism, purchased the estate in the early 20th century and transformed it into a haven for artists, poets, and intellectuals. He established the Edward James Foundation to preserve the estate and its artistic heritage. The estate became a hub for artistic experimentation and creativity, attracting Salvador Dal\u00ed and Ren\u00e9 Magritte.<\/p>\n<p>Today, it is home to the internationally renowned West Dean College of Arts and Conservation.
